Susan Dierckx - "We are always desperate and will try anything to conceive": The convoluted and dynamic process of health seeking among women with infertility in the West Coast Region of The Gambia (RHEA / VUB)

04/10/2018

In many Sub-Saharan African countries, women with infertility search relentlessly for treatment. Guided by the Partners for Applied Social Sciences (PASS) model for health seeking behaviour and access to care research, this study aims to understand the health seeking behaviour of women with infertility in the West Coast region of The Gambia and the influence of aetiological beliefs on health seeking paths. A qualitative approach was used to generate both primary and secondary data for thematic analysis.

Susan Dierckx is PhD student at Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

RHEA Research Seminars are informal gatherings in which scholars present and discuss work in progress that addresses gender issues from an intersectional perspective. The seminar features research that takes place within the Strategic Research Program ‘Gendering Ethnicity & Ethnicizing Gender in Politics & Policy’, as well as research by affiliated RHEA members or scholars just passing by.
