Détails des conférences/cours:

1. DISMANTLING THE GENDER BINARY NORM. International human rights
bodies increasingly agree that the medical treatment of people born with intersex characteristics infringes bodily integrity. In this lecture
Peter Hegarty examines the history of social science thinking about the
gender binary norm and the importance of making that thinking explicit
in social science that examines the bioethical questions raised by
medical treatment of intersex bodies.

2. IMPLICIT NORMS AND THE GENDER OF MARKING. In this lecture Peter
Hegarty revisits classic work in psycholingusitics on masculine generics
to place his more recent work on explanatory focus and order effects in
context. This lecture examines the stakes for feminist psychology in
understanding cognition as a process of sense-making or information
processing.

3. CHANGING GENDER NORMS OVER TIME/ENGAGING THE PUBLIC. Drawing on his work on the farming effects of UK lads mags on the expression of hostile sexism, this lecture examines changing constructions of masculinity in the past generation. This lecture critiques nature/nurture debates in psychology to argue that psychological being is situated in historical time.

4. LGB PSYCHOLOGY CHANGING HISTORY. The emergence of LGB psychology is one of the most successful _impactful_developments that universalized a particular view in modern psychology. Hegarty reviews this history here,
drawing on his 2017 book, _A recent history of lesbian and gay
psychology: Form homophobia to LGBT _to argue that we are all LGBT
psychologists now.

5. MARKING IN HISTORY; Revisiting earlier work from his 2013 book
_Gentlemen's Disagreement, _this concluding lecture examines how to
write critically about the history of psychology with optimism about
what psychology might become in the near future.

PETER HEGARTY is Professor of Psychology at the University of Surrey,
UK. He is the author of _Gentlemen's Disagreement: Alfred Kinsey,
Lewis Terman and the Sexual Politics of Smart Men _(Chicago, 2013) and
_A Recent History of Lesbian and Gay Psychology: From Homophobia to
LGBT_ (Routledge, 2017).
