Women’s enfranchisement and taxation: gender inequality, tax composition and institutions in historical perspective. (Università degli Studi di Pavia)

Deadline: 26/10/2018

This research project focuses on the interactions between gender inequality, tax structure, and institutions both across time and space. The aim consists in empirically exploring the historical roots and institutional determinants of the emergence of different tax rules and regimes across countries from a gender perspective, focusing among others on the role played by legacy of the timing of women’s enfranchisement, family types and values, inheritance rules, and patriarchal norms. This project draws from a series of interlinked strands of the literature on the political economy of taxation, on the impact of women’s enfranchisement on the size and composition of government and on the lasting effect of distant history on female outcomes.
